Forio (Ischia)

Forio is located to the west, lies on the foothills of Epomeo and dominates the western side of the Isle of Ischia. Probably the most beautiful town council of the island from the point of view of nature and landscape. From here you can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets.

The town stands on a promontory that plunges into the sea, consists of the typical homes in this area of the Mediterranean, cubic, white or brightly painted. The landscape is marked by rolling hills and copses extensions, Mediterranean scrub and tree crops; the coast, also has large and small beaches and is moved by headlands, indentations, unusually shaped rocks and peninsulas. One of the most beautiful beaches of the island of Ischia, the Citara rich in thermal springs, takes its name from a temple dedicated to the goddess Venus Citarea. Where it was once the temple, in the 60's, was built a spa park, the Giardini Poseidon. With its pools of varying temperatures, the manicured gardens and a private beach, spa park is the largest island of Ischia. Several restaurants, a wine cellar carved directly into the mountain, boutique, newspaper kiosk and a bar can spend the time pleasantly. The gardens with their beautiful flower beds invite you to continue walking.

Panza is a fraction of Forio. This pretty town is popular with German tourists and those who love peace. Its landscape is characterized by the volcanic crater of Campotese. Here you will find great vineyards including beautiful walks you can do and where you will find here many restaurants scattered throughout the island's wine. The largest winery of the Island, the "D'Ambra Wine", has its headquarters in Panza at this location and you can also visit a museum of rural culture of the island, the "Museum of the farmer." Particularly fascinating and worthy of an excursion by Panza is Sorgeto Bay. In this bay there is a source of thermal water at about 75 ░ C directly into the sea and the sea water warms up there. Bathing in the pools formed by many rounded stones does not cost anything and is an unforgettable experience. A small restaurant serves delicious dishes and provides guests with beach chairs. With its very hot natural springs Sorgeto Bay invites you to swim all year round.

The symbol of Forio is the shrine of "Our Lady of Salvation," which rises above the sea and was finished in 18 th century. of a church of 16 century. The simplicity of the church refers to elements of Greek, Byzantine and Moorish. On days when the air is clear you can see from the church square islands of Ventotene, Ponza, and the coast to Mount Circeo. The sanctuary of Santa Maria al Monte painted in white, is about. 400m above Forio. It is also seen from the coast. From Citara winds up to the church a road between houses, vineyards and boulders. Even from the top of Epomeo, descending to Forio, you can pass in front of the church which is at the end of the forest Frassitelli.

Dall'812, and then for many centuries, Forio was exposed to attacks from pirates. To defend against pirates locals thought it was an interesting defense system by increasing the observation towers on every hill within and outside the country. As soon as there was a threat of danger to the other tower gave the alarm. So soon the whole island was informed and the inhabitants could take refuge in the mountains. The largest tower of defense, was the so-called "Tower", located near the port of Forio. Today marked the stone-built green tuff are an art gallery and a small museum.
